George Q. Daley, the dean of Harvard Medical School, said in an email to relevant people on the 7th that because the medical school agreed to reduce the subsidies for affiliated hospitals with financial difficulties, the college faced 39 million yuan this year. A huge deficit of 65 million yuan, and the situation may be worse in the next fiscal year.
Unlike most medical schools, Harvard Medical School does not own or operate hospitals. Instead, it relies on 15 affiliated hospitals and research institutions such as Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Children ’s Hospital, and Dana-Farber Cancer Center to provide medical schools with approximately 3100 a year. Ten thousand yuan of funds to provide students with medical and clinical training, hire many doctors and scientists working at Harvard Medical School.
After the outbreak of the New Coronary Pneumonia epidemic, hospitals faced huge financial losses due to the loss and delay of unnecessary operations and consultations. Daly said that the main reason for the deficit at Harvard Medical School was the decision to support the affiliated hospital. He listed other factors that caused the deficit, such as the cancellation of external education plans and the transition to “unforeseen expenses” in distance teaching and research.
Crimson, a Harvard student newspaper, reports that the school ’s medical school has been in poor financial condition for the past decade; the medical school had a nine-year loss record between 2008 and 2018, and it faced a deficit of 49 million yuan in fiscal 2016.
In his annual medical school report in January 2020, Daly had expected the deficit for the current fiscal year to be reduced to 4 million yuan.
